West Macomb County is the part of the county we reach from Auburn Hills, the western edge that runs along the Oakland County line. It takes in Sterling Heights, Shelby Township and Utica, where the subdivisions of the 1960s through the 1980s sit on the same hard Great Lakes water and the same heavy clay as our Oakland cities. We do not cover the whole county from here; this page is for the west side, the towns a short run east of our office.

The western edge along the Oakland County line
Our range in Macomb stops at the western towns because that is what we can serve well from Auburn Hills. Sterling Heights, Shelby Township and Utica sit right across the county line from Troy and Rochester Hills, so a call there is a short drive, not a trek across the county. Farther east the drive grows and the response slows, so we keep our Macomb work to the west side rather than stretching coverage we cannot stand behind.

Subdivisions of the 1960s through the 1980s
The housing that defines west Macomb went up in a long postwar wave, mostly brick ranches and colonials on slab or full basements from the 1960s into the 1980s. That means plumbing now forty to sixty years old: original cast iron drains starting to scale and crack, galvanized or early copper supply lines, and water heaters and shutoffs well past their first replacement. The work here is the steady turnover of a generation of homes reaching the age where the plumbing it was built with wears out.

The Clinton River corridor and older downtowns
The Clinton River runs through the west side, and Utica grew up on it with an older downtown and a core of homes that predate the subdivisions around them. River-corridor lots sit lower and wetter, which puts sump pumps and basement backups in play, and the older cores carry clay sewer lines that tree roots find. We handle both the subdivision ranch and the older river-town house, because the two sit a few blocks apart out here.

Hard water and water heaters near the Oakland County line
West Macomb drinks the same hard Great Lakes water as the Oakland cities next to it, and that hardness is quietly behind a lot of the calls. It scales up water heaters and shortens their life, crusts faucet aerators and shower heads, and leaves the tank sediment that makes a heater rumble and run short. Replacing a water heater in a Sterling Heights or Shelby Township home is often the moment to add or update a softener, so the next one lasts as long as it should rather than scaling out early.

Plumbing questions from West Macomb County
Which Macomb County towns do you serve?
We cover west Macomb from Auburn Hills: Sterling Heights, Shelby Township and Utica, the towns right across the line from our Oakland County cities. We do not serve the eastern and lakeshore parts of the county, because a plumber based in Auburn Hills cannot respond there the way those areas deserve.
Why only the west side of Macomb County?
Because that is the part we can reach quickly and serve well from Auburn Hills. The western towns are a short drive across the county line, while the east side is far enough that our response would slow. We would rather do the west side right than stretch coverage we cannot back up.
Are west Macomb homes old enough to need repiping?
Many are getting there. The subdivisions that built out from the 1960s into the 1980s carry plumbing that is now forty to sixty years old, including original cast iron drains and early copper or galvanized supply lines. Some need only targeted repairs, but others have reached the point where repiping a section is the sensible fix rather than chasing one leak after another.
